| This page provides access to
dictionaries, lexicons, glossaries, lemmatized and defined vocabulary
from specific medieval and some early modern texts, to facilitate the
reading of medieval and Renaissance works written in the French or
romance vernaculars of their periods. Some of the dictionaries are
valuable landmarks in the history of French lexicography. Some
are assembled specifically for the interpretation of texts not written
in modern French. In interpreting passages from medieval and early modern works, anyone who has access to the Corpus de la Littérature Médiévale CD or ARTFL Subscription Databases can frequently find helpful alternative contexts for difficult words. doing this with Google requires patience and caution, but is not impossible. Since French was not a widely used or recognized inter-provincial language until at least the 14th century, dictionaries of regional romance languages may also yield helpful information. |
