Arts Poétiques @ Globe-Gate
I have been quite liberal in my classification of works under the above rubric. One might think that
with so many schools and movements in French literary history, the task would be easier, but it
remains a daunting one. Boileau's normative monument, formed around the literary tastes of a rather
narrowly constituted public, has defined what most of us expect from an "art poétique", though
many are more personal, less prescriptive, less categorical. Some spend less time describing or
passing judgment on what has been written, and concentrate instead on a poetic ideal. In some cases, we
are faced with a poet's personal, somewhat hermetic view. In others, we look into the future to a
paperless poetry. I have included one for children who want to become poets, one for drama, and
Dante's elaborate work, because it is a landmark for vernacular expression (though written in Latin),
and well-known in France. I would appreciate information about other similar online French
documents which I have overlooked. A second section includes some essays on poetics, rhetoric and the
art poétique.
